A COUNTRY 4TH OF JULY
As a kid, I lived out in the country, we had a small community and a one room School House. On the 4th of July, the whole community got together at a field next to a irrigation ditch and we put on a PICNIC to beat all picnics. The food tables groaned against the weight of all that home cookin' and there were tubs of ice cold watermelon and bottles of pop and pitchers of iced tea and lemonade. Everyone brought their ice cream freezers with them so we had lots and lots of homemade ice cream and everyone took turns cracking the handles. When the guys started feeling their oats, they'd throw the girls into the ditch. There were games like tug-'o-war and baseball, three-legged races and horseshoes. There was no end of fun and it lasted from mid-morning till just past dark. Some of the people headed for town to watch fireworks at City Park and others stayed to clean up and shoot off our own fireworks.
