The Rose is the official flower of Father's Day,
red for a living father and white if he is deceased. I lost my father in
1989 at the age of 82.
Father's Day is the most celebrated of any June holiday. It was first celebrated on June 19, 1909 in Spokane, Washington. It is a day set aside for all children to honor their fathers. Most commonly a card and gift is given by the children and in many house holds the wife also gives her husband a gift. Sometimes they are small tokens of ones love or an expensive or elaborate gift. That date was chosen as it was her father's
birthday.
The third Sunday in June was set aside in order to celebrate Father's Day in 1924. There is a good page to visit for a thorough history of Father's Day given in a Father's Day
speech from the floor of Congress by Senator Robert Byrd. An
excellent page to visit is Annie's Homepage full of facts, fun and ideas. Another good page to visit is No Place Like Home For The Holidays. .
And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord." *Ephesians 6:4*
Most schools in the US have their graduation ceremonies in June whether it is High
School or College. Grade schools and middle schools quite often hold graduation ceremonies for Kindergarten and for the children moving up to the next level of school. Some of the grade schools even go all out with caps and gowns for the little ones and they all give graduation certificates to the students.
June is the traditional month for weddings. Girls for centuries have dreamed of and planned to be a June Bride with all the trimmings of a big wedding. The Bride wants it all and the groom would usually prefer a small get together of short duration. There is also a tradition among students in the military schools in this country to be married in June immediately after graduation.
