March

March is traditionally a blustery month in North America. Winter is on the way out but still can raise it's ugly head and be quite nasty while doing it. The first day of Spring is in the month of March but it is usually windy and some what rainy. There was a ditty  when I was a child that says:

March winds bring
April showers for
May flowers.

The March winds blow away the snows and brings warmer weather for the early spring blooms to peek their heads above the ground as it thaws. Now this all depends on which latitude you live. The further south in the northern hemisphere of course, it's spring like for months. That's what I experienced in the Los Angeles area. Strawberries in January after all. In the northern climes, spring may not come until late April or early May. I remember as a child in Laramie, Wyoming, spring really didn't get started until May but then we ice skated in an outdoor rink until spring too.

March is a transitional month, finishing the doldrums of winter and not quite the glories of spring. Besides the flowers starting to spring forth, the birds are returning. I hear bird song now in the wee morning hours and the frogs are serenading at the marsh. Love is in the air.

March is kite season. I used to watch some huge kites being flown in the large fields and vacant lots. It always looked like such fun. However, kites, like yoyos are something I could never keep going. My kites would soon make a severe nose dive and crash. So I became a spectator of the sport. They are so much fun to watch soaring through the air. You can imagine being a passenger of one and take yourself to all the places you've wanted to see or do loop de loops and fly upside down while "in" a kite. All it takes is a little old fashioned imagination.

March abounds with holidays and observances to partake in. Many are well known but there are many that are new and different. Many fire the imagination. The ones I have listed are but a few.
