October

October is one of my favorite times of year. It really starts in last September but the entire month of October is a delight to me. I know many people will say that they would think Winter would be my favorite with being *snogirl and having SnoVille and the SnoFolk. Well it is a great time and Christmas is my favorite holiday but Fall is my favorite time or season. I love the warm fragrant days and the cool crisp nights filled with promise of Jack Frost. You might well have had your first snow but the days are now glorious. The scenery is spectacular with color and no artist can really do the scenery justice. While my family does not observe Halloween in any form there is still plenty of fun and activities for October. I used to take my Girl Scout Troop on Autumn Nature walks and treasure hunts. October is best since most things have changed colors by that time. Collecting Fall leaves for bouquets or preserving is always fun but my favorite fun as a kid was raking huge piles of leaves and jumping into them or raking them into the shape of a house floor plan and playing house in them. I guess I was a frustrated architect even then. Just taking a long walk through the fallen leaves is most rewarding as they crunch beneath your feet.

My favorite treat for October was and is still Cold Apple Cider with Ginger Snap cookies dipped in to soak up the tangy juice or crisp Delicious Apples with caramels. Home made gingersnaps are great and are fun when an apple cookie cutter is used. I always hated trying to eat a caramel apple so I just take a handful of Kraft Caramels and pop them in my mouth along with a big bite of apple. When ever I'd buy one in a store the apple was always mushy or bruised, now I get the best of everything without the hassle.

There are many communities in the USA with ties to German ancestry. Many of those communities celebrate Oktoberfest and that's the place I want to be. I love German food and music which fits well since a good number of my ancestors are German. My maternal grandfather's family immigrated to America when he was five. My father's side also is heavy in German ancestry.
