schoolhouse September has long been established as the month of back to school. Many parts of the country, school actually starts at the end of August but the most common time is just after Labor Day which is the first Monday in September and the first of many holidays in the month. I remember how my children used to be so anxious for school to be out for the summer but come towards the end of August and they just couldn't wait to get back to school. Shopping for school clothes was always an ordeal for me but the girls always enjoyed their new outfits and getting their school supplies was always a treat too. Who'd a thunk that getting pens, pencils, paper and crayons could bring such happiness. To read about what schools and school rooms used to be like you can go to Jeanne's Back To School Page. The link is below.

I just missed getting to attend a two room school house. They didn't have kindergarten at the school near our farmhouse so I was too start first grade the year we moved into town so I missed the fun and didn't attend kindergarten at all. I was very sorry to have to go to a city school then but I suppose I didn't grow up any worse for the experience. Actually I think I missed the farm more than the school. My husband attended a country school all through his school years until the 9th grade. He had that proverbial long walk to school every day in all kinds of weather. We both lived in Northern Colorado so you know he had some grueling trips to school. There was an old fashioned gas station\store combo about half way so he pick up pop bottles to return for a pop or candy. He did his duty toward ecology I would say.

His family also had large gardens to harvest every fall and they had orchards when he was little. There are a lot of orchards here too in Washington State. There are peaches and apples among others but the apple is king. The apple harvest here is a really big deal. The product is very important to the State, so big in fact that the annual football game between the two PAC 10 colleges on opposite sides of the state is called The Apple Cup. Washington State apples are shipped all around the world. My favorite apple is the Red Delicious, it always has been.

And that brings to mind another thing that happens each fall. Football ! High Schools and Colleges throughout the country go full tilt into their football programs but my favorite is Pro Football. Yes, *snogirl is a football fan, a Denver Bronco Fan. I have been a loyal fan since my childhood but not the avid fan I have been since 1983. It was a thrill to be able to watch them win the Super Bowl twice and John to finally get his wins and MVP. It will be strange to not have him there anymore, the end of an era.

There are several other holidays, happenings and celebrations in September. The best day in September though is September 22, 1920. My Mother's Birthday.
My beloved Mother passed way on November 10, 2003. She is sorely missed.

These holidays and celebrations are very appropriate to my getting this page up and completed by September 1st, which I didn't succeed in doing. It was a great Labor Day for me to get it finished and unfortunately I was Late For Something Day and I must beg Your Pardon Day. Since I am a Grandparent Day, I am slow and I had to stop off and get an Ice Cream Cone Day and give My Teddy Bear Day a snuggle and get out of the way of my Newspaper Carrier's Day but all was well as he begged my Pardon Day too.

I can only hope getting this posted by the First Day of Autumn will bring Peace Day to SnoVille. I thought I would celebrate and be a Good Neighbor Day by inviting them over for Hot Dog Day and Apple Dumpling Days. Speaking of dogs, since there are no Dogs Week in SnoVille for obvious reasons, only rabbits and birds, that was one week I don't have to observe. Good thing to because other wise I really might need to find those Emergency Care Week guys. Besides, Doug Ross (of ER fame) moved to Seattle.

Sorry folks, I just couldn't resist. It all worked out too well to let it go by.         Written by *snogirl 2000
